Hong Kong MPF Contribution Calculator
Mandatory Provident Fund contributions in Hong Kong — 5% employee and 5% employer on relevant income between $7,100 and $30,000 a month, capped at $1,500 each, with a retirement projection.
How it works
Employee = 5% × min(income, $30,000) if income ≥ $7,100 else 0; Employer = 5% × min(income, $30,000); both capped at $1,500 a month
The Mandatory Provident Fund is Hong Kong’s compulsory retirement scheme. Employees and employers each contribute 5% of relevant income, but only within a band: employees earning under $7,100 a month contribute nothing (the employer still does), and income above $30,000 is ignored, so the maximum is $1,500 each. Because of that low cap, most middle and high earners find MPF alone will not fund retirement — hence tax-deductible voluntary contributions (TVC, up to $60,000 a year together with qualifying annuity premiums). Since May 2025 the “offsetting” of severance and long-service payments against employer MPF contributions has been abolished for service after that date.
Worked example
$35,000 a month: contributions are capped at $1,500 each — $3,000 a month or $36,000 a year. From age 35 with $200,000 saved at 4%, that grows to about $2.7 million by 65.
