How it works
gift budget = people × average per gift · total = gifts + food + travel + decorations
Gifts are usually the largest and most elastic holiday cost, so they’re built from a list length times an average per gift; the other categories are entered directly. The total and the per-category breakdown show where the money actually goes, which is the first step to trimming without feeling deprived. Set a total you’re comfortable with, then adjust the average gift or the list to fit it.
Worked example
10 people at $40 a gift is $400 in gifts. Add $200 for food and hosting, $300 for travel and $100 for decorations, and the holiday budget totals $1,000 — with gifts the largest slice at 40%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I bring the total down without cutting people?
Lower the average per gift rather than the list — dropping from $40 to $25 a head on a 10-person list saves $150 by itself. Group gifts, homemade items and a spending cap agreed with family are other levers that keep everyone on the list.
Should I budget for after-holiday costs too?
It helps. Wrapping, cards, shipping, tips and post-holiday sales all land in the same season, so a small “extras” cushion in the decorations line keeps them from becoming a surprise on the statement.
How far ahead should I start saving?
Divide your target by the months until the holidays: a $1,000 budget saved over 10 months is $100 a month set aside, which is far easier than one December hit to the credit card.
