How it works
Torque (lb-ft) = horsepower × 5252 ÷ RPM
Horsepower and torque are linked by engine speed: power is torque times rotational speed. At 5,252 rpm they are numerically equal, which is why dyno graphs always cross there.
Worked example
200 hp at 5,000 rpm is 200 × 5252 ÷ 5000 ≈ 210 lb-ft.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the curves cross at 5252?
Because of the constant in the formula — at 5,252 rpm the horsepower and lb-ft numbers are always identical.
Which matters more?
Torque is felt as pulling force; horsepower is torque sustained at speed. Both matter depending on how you drive.
