How it works

Elapsed minutes = (end day number × 1,440 + end minute of day) − (start day number × 1,440 + start minute of day) · hours = minutes ÷ 60 · days = minutes ÷ 1,440 · weeks = minutes ÷ 10,080

Both moments are turned into a running count of minutes on the proleptic Gregorian calendar (the same day count ISO 8601 uses), so month lengths and leap days are handled automatically, then the start is subtracted from the end. The clock times are read as local wall-clock times in one time zone; if a daylight-saving change falls between the two moments, add or subtract that hour yourself (or use UTC times).

Worked example

From Monday, October 5, 2026 at 08:30 to Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 17:15: three full days are 72 hours, and 08:30 → 17:15 adds 8 hours 45 minutes, so the gap is 3 days 8 hours 45 minutes = 80.75 hours = 4,845 minutes = 290,700 seconds (3.3646 days or 0.48 weeks).

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the hours between two dates and times?

Count the whole days between the dates and multiply by 24, then add the hours between the two clock times (subtract if the end time is earlier in the day). Monday 08:30 to Thursday 17:15 is 3 × 24 + 8.75 = 80.75 hours.

Does it handle month ends and leap years?

Yes. Dates are converted to a continuous day count, so a span from February 27 to March 2 correctly includes February 29 in a leap year such as 2028.

What about daylight saving time?

Times are treated as plain wall-clock times in a single time zone. If clocks spring forward during the span, the real elapsed time is one hour less; if they fall back, one hour more. Enter both times in UTC to avoid the issue.

How do I turn 80.75 hours into hours and minutes?

The whole number is the hours and the decimal × 60 is the minutes: 0.75 × 60 = 45, so 80.75 hours is 80 hours 45 minutes, or 3 days 8 hours 45 minutes.

Can I count only working hours?

This tool counts every hour of the span. For time within business hours only (for example 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays), use the working hours calculator.
