Humidifier Refill Frequency Calculator
See how long a humidifier tank lasts and how often you’ll refill it, from the tank size, mist output and hours you run it each day.
How it works
Hourly use = output (gal/day) ÷ 24 · Run hours per tank = tank ÷ hourly use · Days per refill = tank ÷ (hourly use × hours/day)
A humidifier empties its tank at a rate set by the mist output you dial in, so the tank’s run time is simply its volume divided by that hourly output. How many days that buys you then depends on how many hours a day you actually run it — a nursery humidifier running all night refills far more often than one used only in the evening. Larger tanks and lower output settings both stretch the interval between refills.
Worked example
A 1-gallon tank on a unit rated at 2 gal/day uses 2 ÷ 24 = 0.083 gal per hour, so it runs about 12 hours before empty. At 10 hours of use a day it drinks 0.83 gallons daily, meaning you refill roughly every 1.2 days.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I refill a humidifier?
It depends on tank size, output setting and run time — anywhere from twice a day for a small tank on high, to every few days for a large tank on low. This calculator gives your specific interval; whatever it is, empty and dry the tank daily to stop mould and bacteria.
Does running it on a lower setting save water?
Yes — output is roughly proportional to the setting, so halving the mist level roughly doubles how long the tank lasts. Lower settings also reduce the risk of over-humidifying, which can cause condensation and mould on windows and walls.
Should I use tap water?
Distilled or demineralised water is best. Tap water’s minerals leave white dust on surfaces and build up scale inside the unit, and warm-mist and evaporative models especially benefit from cleaner water and regular descaling.
