How it works

Maturity = P × (1 + r)^(months/12); doubling time = ln 2 ÷ ln(1 + r) ≈ 115 months at 7.5%

Kisan Vikas Patra is the post-office scheme famous for “doubling your money” — at the current 7.5% compounded annually that takes 115 months, or nine years and seven months, which is exactly the notified maturity. Anyone can buy it (the kisan name is historical), there is no upper limit, and certificates can be pledged or transferred. Unlike NSC or PPF, KVP gives no Section 80C deduction and the interest is fully taxable at slab (though no TDS is deducted), so it is chiefly a safe, sovereign-backed lump-sum product for people who like the certainty of a fixed doubling date. Premature encashment is allowed after two and a half years at pre-published values.

Worked example

₹50,000 at 7.5% for 115 months: ₹50,000 × 1.075^9.583 ≈ ₹1,00,000 — doubled, with ₹50,000 of taxable interest spread over the term.

Frequently asked questions

Is KVP better than a bank FD?

Rates are similar to the best 5-year FDs, and KVP carries a sovereign guarantee with no deposit-insurance cap. FDs are more flexible and some offer 80C (tax-saver FD).

Can NRIs buy KVP?

No — only resident Indians (individually, jointly, or as guardian for a minor). Trusts can also invest, but HUFs and NRIs cannot.
