How it works

Dose = base per medium load × load-size factor × soil factor · base = 1.5 / 1.0 / 0.5 fl oz for regular / 2× / 4×

A medium load of regular detergent runs about 1.5 fluid ounces, but concentrated HE formulas pack the same cleaning into less liquid — roughly half for 2× and a quarter for 4×. Load size and how dirty the clothes are then scale that base dose up or down. Overdosing is common and counterproductive: excess detergent does not rinse out, leaving residue that stiffens fabric and can feed odor in the machine.

Worked example

A large, normally soiled load with a 2× concentrated detergent: base 1.0 fl oz × 1.5 (large) × 1.0 (normal) = 1.5 fl oz, or about 3 tablespoons — not the full cap.

Frequently asked questions

Why is less detergent often better?

Modern high-efficiency machines use little water, so extra detergent cannot rinse away. The residue stays in fabric and in the drum, where it can trap odor and irritate skin. Dosing to the load usually cleans just as well with less.

How do I read a concentrated detergent cap?

The cap lines correspond to load sizes for that specific concentration. A 4× detergent line sits much lower than a regular one, so match the line to your load rather than filling the cap.

Do pods let me skip this?

Pods hold a fixed dose sized for a medium load. For very large or heavily soiled loads you may need two, and for tiny loads a pod can be too much — a measured liquid gives you finer control.
