Leather Stitching Thread Calculator (Saddle Stitch)
Work out how much thread to cut for hand saddle stitching leather from seam length, stitch spacing (pricking iron pitch) and leather thickness, with the number of stitches and the thread-to-seam ratio.
How it works
stitches = seam length ÷ stitch spacing · thread in the seam = stitches × 2 × (spacing + leather thickness) · thread to cut = thread in the seam × (1 + margin) + extra for needles and tie-off
In a saddle stitch one thread with a needle on each end passes through every hole twice, so each stitch uses two runs along the surface (one on each face) plus two passes through the leather. That makes the thread roughly 2 × (spacing + thickness) per stitch — about four times the seam length when the leather is as thick as the stitch spacing, which is where the common "4× the seam" rule comes from. Thick leather and fine spacing push the ratio higher, so add a safety margin and enough tail to hold both needles and back-stitch the ends.
Worked example
A 30 cm seam at 4 mm spacing in 4 mm of leather has 75 stitches; 75 × 2 × (4 + 4) = 1,200 mm of thread in the seam. Add 10% and 30 cm for the needles: cut 162 cm of thread (1.62 m), 5.4 times the seam length.

Frequently asked questions
How much thread do I need for saddle stitching?
A good rule of thumb is 4 times the seam length plus about 30 cm (12 in) for the needles; for thick leather or tight stitch spacing use 5 to 6 times.
What stitch spacing should I use?
2.7–3 mm for small leather goods such as wallets, 3.38–3.85 mm for bags and belts, and 4–6 mm for heavy belts, holsters and saddlery.
How thick is 4 oz leather?
Leather weight in ounces is about 1/64 in (0.4 mm) per ounce, so 4 oz leather is about 1.6 mm and 8–9 oz is about 3.4 mm.
Can I join thread if I run out?
Yes — back-stitch two or three holes with the old thread, start the new thread a few holes back and overlap, then trim. It is cleaner to cut enough thread for the whole seam.
