How it works

Months = years × 12 · FV = payment × ((1 + r/12)^months − 1) ÷ (r/12) · Growth forgone = FV − total spent

Lifestyle creep is the tendency to spend more as you earn more, so raises vanish into bigger cars, nicer dinners and pricier subscriptions instead of savings. This calculator reframes a modest monthly increase as the portfolio you are giving up by spending rather than investing it. Small recurring amounts, compounded for decades, add up to surprisingly large sums.

Worked example

An extra $300/month for 20 years is $72,000 of direct spending. Invested at 7% instead, those same contributions would grow to about $156,000 — meaning the lifestyle upgrade quietly costs roughly $84,000 in forgone growth on top of the cash spent.

Frequently asked questions

What is lifestyle creep?

It is when your spending rises to match (or exceed) each pay increase, so your savings rate never improves even as income grows. Because the extra spending is recurring, its long-term opportunity cost is large.

How do I avoid it?

A common tactic is to automatically save or invest a fixed share of every raise before it reaches your checking account, so lifestyle upgrades come out of what is left rather than the whole increase.

Is all lifestyle inflation bad?

No — spending more on things you genuinely value can be worthwhile. The point is to make it a deliberate choice by seeing the trade-off, not to let spending drift upward by default.
