How it works

Liturgical year starts on the 1st Sunday of Advent (the Sunday from Nov 27 to Dec 3) · Sunday cycle: year in which the liturgical year ends ÷ 3 → remainder 1 = Year A, 2 = Year B, 0 = Year C · weekday cycle: odd year = I, even year = II · Christmas Time ends with the Baptism of the Lord · Lent = Ash Wednesday (Easter − 46) to Holy Thursday · Easter Time = Easter to Pentecost (Easter + 49) · Ordinary Time weeks after Pentecost are counted back from Christ the King = week 34

The Roman Catholic liturgical year follows the General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar (1969): Advent, Christmas Time, Ordinary Time, Lent, the Easter Triduum and Easter Time, then Ordinary Time again until Christ the King. Sunday Mass readings rotate on a three-year cycle (A: Matthew, B: Mark, C: Luke) and weekday readings on a two-year cycle (I and II). Movable dates come from Easter, and the Epiphany option covers countries such as the United States, Mexico and Colombia, where Epiphany is moved to a Sunday and the Baptism of the Lord can fall on a Monday. Feasts of saints and local solemnities can change the color of a particular day.

Worked example

Thursday, October 8, 2026 belongs to the liturgical year that began on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2025, and ends on November 28, 2026 (the next Advent starts November 29). Pentecost was May 24, so the Sunday before, October 4, was the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time and October 8 is Thursday of Week 27 in Ordinary Time: season Ordinary Time, color green, Sunday readings Year A (Matthew) and weekday readings Year II. Christ the King falls on November 22, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What liturgical year are we in — A, B or C?

From the First Sunday of Advent on November 30, 2025 until November 28, 2026 the Church reads Year A (Matthew); from November 29, 2026 it is Year B (Mark), and from Advent 2027 Year C (Luke). Weekdays follow Year II in 2026 and Year I in 2027.

When does the liturgical year begin?

On the First Sunday of Advent, the fourth Sunday before Christmas — always between November 27 and December 3.

What are the liturgical colors?

Violet for Advent and Lent (rose may be used on the 3rd Sunday of Advent and 4th Sunday of Lent), white for Christmas and Easter and for feasts of the Lord, Mary and saints who were not martyrs, red for Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost and martyrs, and green for Ordinary Time.

How is the week of Ordinary Time counted?

The first part starts the day after the Baptism of the Lord (week 1). After Pentecost the numbering is counted back from the last week, the 34th, which begins with the solemnity of Christ the King, so some week numbers are skipped each year.

Is Ascension on Thursday or Sunday?

The universal calendar places Ascension on the Thursday 39 days after Easter, but many countries move it to the following Sunday, and Corpus Christi is likewise often moved from Thursday to Sunday.
