LPG Cylinder Usage & Cost Calculator (India) — Days per Cylinder, Monthly Cost & PNG Comparison

How long should a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder last and what does cooking cost? Days per cylinder from household size, meals and cooking style, monthly gas cost at your refill price and any subsidy, cylinders per year, the piped natural gas (PNG) equivalent per SCM, an induction cooktop comparison at your electricity tariff, the 5 kg free-trade and 19 kg commercial cylinder economics, and leak-and-safety checks.

How it works

LPG per day ≈ people × cooked meals × 60 g × style factor · days per cylinder = kg ÷ kg per day · monthly cost = kg per day × 30.4 × (refill price − subsidy) ÷ kg per cylinder · PNG SCM = LPG kg × 12.8 ÷ 10.5 (same 55% stove efficiency) · induction kWh = LPG kg × 12.8 × 0.55 ÷ 0.85

A domestic cylinder holds a fixed 14.2 kg of gas, so how long it lasts is a matter of how much cooking a household does: roughly sixty grams of LPG per person per cooked meal in ordinary Indian cooking, more with long simmering and frying, less with pressure cookers and lids. From that daily consumption follow the refills a year — with the twelve-cylinder subsidised cap in view — and the monthly cost at the refill price, and, since all cooking fuels are ultimately buying useful heat, the same figure converts into cubic metres of piped gas or kilowatt-hours on an induction plate for an honest comparison at local prices.

Worked example

Four people eating two and a half cooked meals a day in a typical kitchen use about 600 g of LPG daily, so a 14.2 kg cylinder lasts around 24 days — 15 refills a year, above the 12-cylinder cap — and at ₹853 a refill cooking costs about ₹1,100 a month. Piped gas at ₹49 per SCM would cost roughly ₹1,090 for the same cooking and induction at ₹8/kWh about ₹1,210 — slightly dearer, though cheaper for pressure-cooking alone; heavy cooking would shorten the cylinder to 18 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG cheaper than LPG?

Per unit of useful heat, PNG in most Indian cities is comparable to or 10–20% cheaper than a subsidised-market LPG refill (much cheaper than commercial LPG), and it removes booking, delivery and running-out. The connection deposit and pipework are the upfront cost; it is not available everywhere.

How do I check how much gas is left?

Weigh the cylinder: the tare (empty) weight is stamped on the collar (≈ 15–16 kg); anything above it is gas. Or pour warm water down the side — the level where it stays cool is the liquid line. Booking when a third is left avoids running dry.
