How it works

days = Julian Day Number − 584283 (GMT correlation) · Long Count = days written in base 20/18: b'ak'tun (144,000 days) . k'atun (7,200) . tun (360) . winal (20) . k'in (1) · Tzolk'in number = (days + 3) mod 13 + 1, day sign = (days + 19) mod 20 · Haab' position = (days + 348) mod 365 → month = ⌊pos ÷ 20⌋, day = pos mod 20 · Lord of the Night = G((days + 8) mod 9 + 1)

The Classic Maya kept several interlocking counts. The Long Count numbers days from a mythical creation date, 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ajaw 8 Kumk'u, which the Goodman–Martínez–Thompson (GMT) correlation places on August 11, 3114 BC (proleptic Gregorian), Julian Day 584283. The 260-day Tzolk'in combines 13 numbers with 20 named days; the 365-day Haab' has 18 months of 20 days plus the 5-day Wayeb'. Together they form the 52-year Calendar Round. Most Mayanists use 584283; 584285 shifts every date by two days and is closer to some Highland Maya communities' living count.

Worked example

December 21, 2012 — the famous "end" of the 13th b'ak'tun — is Julian Day Number 2,456,283. Subtracting 584,283 gives 1,872,000 days = 13 × 144,000, so the Long Count is 13.0.0.0.0. The Tzolk'in is 4 Ajaw and the Haab' is 3 K'ank'in, Lord of the Night G9: the same Calendar Round day sign as creation, and the start of a new b'ak'tun — not the end of the world.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Mayan birth sign?

In popular Maya astrology your "sign" is the Tzolk'in day of your birth — a number from 1 to 13 and one of 20 day signs such as Imix (crocodile), Ix (jaguar) or Ajaw (lord). Enter your birth date and read the Tzolk'in line; the 13 numbers and 20 signs repeat every 260 days.

Did the Maya calendar predict the end of the world in 2012?

No. December 21, 2012 completed the 13th b'ak'tun (period of about 394 years) and the Long Count simply rolled on to 13.0.0.0.1. Maya inscriptions even mention dates thousands of years later.

Which correlation constant should I use?

The GMT correlation 584283 is the academic standard and matches the 260-day count still kept by K'iche' daykeepers within a couple of days; 584285 is its main alternative. Use the same constant when comparing with other sources.

What is the Calendar Round?

The combination of a Tzolk'in day and a Haab' day. Because 260 and 365 share a factor of 5, the same pair only returns after 18,980 days — 52 Haab' years — which the Aztecs and Maya treated like a "century".
