How it works

Kit per serving = box price ÷ servings · Premium = kit per serving − grocery per serving · Yearly extra = premium × servings × boxes × 12

Meal kits bundle groceries, portioning and recipe planning into one price, so they almost always cost more per serving than buying ingredients yourself. The right question is what that premium buys — saved shopping time, less food waste, fewer decisions — and whether it is worth the yearly total. Multiplying the per-serving gap by how often you order turns a small difference into a real budget line.

Worked example

A $70 box of 6 servings is $11.67 a serving. Groceries for the same meals run $6 a serving, so the kit carries a $5.67 premium. At 4 boxes a month — 24 servings — that is about $136 a month extra, or roughly $1,632 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Are meal kits ever cheaper than groceries?

Rarely on ingredient cost alone, but they can win against takeout or against a grocery trip where you overbuy and waste food. Compare against your realistic grocery habits, not an ideal shopping list.

What am I paying the premium for?

Convenience: pre-measured ingredients, no meal planning, no shopping, and little waste. Whether that is worth several hundred to a couple thousand dollars a year depends on how much you value the time and reduced decision fatigue.

How do I lower the meal-kit cost?

Use introductory discounts, pause weeks you will not cook, and pick the higher-serving boxes, which usually have a lower per-serving price. Skipping just one box a month meaningfully cuts the annual premium.
