How it works

Gross MRR = Σ (tier price × tier members) · Net MRR = gross × (1 − fee%) · ARR = net MRR × 12 · ARPU = net MRR ÷ members

A tiered membership stacks several price points so casual fans and superfans can each pick their level. Total MRR is just the sum of price times member count across tiers, but the mix tells the real story: a handful of high-tier members often contributes as much as hundreds at the entry level. Track average revenue per member (ARPU) after platform fees to see whether adding tiers is genuinely lifting the economics or just splitting the same audience into more buckets.

Worked example

400 members at $5, 120 at $15, and 20 at $50 give gross MRR of $2,000 + $1,800 + $1,000 = $4,800. A 12% platform-and-processing cut leaves $4,224 net MRR, about $50,688 a year. Across 540 members that is roughly $7.82 net revenue per member.

Frequently asked questions

How many membership tiers should I offer?

Three is the common sweet spot — an accessible entry tier, a mid tier that most choose, and a premium tier for superfans. Too many tiers create decision paralysis; too few leave money on the table from your most enthusiastic supporters.

What is ARPU and why track it?

ARPU is average revenue per user — net MRR divided by total members. It tells you whether your pricing and tier mix are improving over time, independent of raw member count, which is why it is a core subscription metric.

Do platform fees differ by tier?

Usually the percentage is the same across tiers, but fixed per-transaction processing fees eat proportionally more from cheap tiers. A $0.30 charge is 6% of a $5 sub but under 1% of a $50 sub, so low tiers are less efficient than they look.
