How it works

Effective per node = rated × wall factor (0.85/0.65/0.45) × floor penalty · Nodes = ceil(area ÷ effective per node)

Manufacturers rate a mesh node’s coverage in open space, but walls, floors and interference cut real-world reach substantially — so the sane way to size a mesh is to derate that rating before dividing it into your floor area. Dense materials like brick and plaster hurt Wi-Fi far more than drywall, and every floor a signal must pass through weakens it. Placement matters as much as node count: a node needs a strong backhaul link to the one before it, so nodes spaced too far apart help less than the raw area math suggests.

Worked example

A 2,500 sq ft two-story home with a typical wall mix takes a node rated at 1,500 sq ft down to 1,500 × 0.65 × 0.9 ≈ 878 sq ft of real coverage. 2,500 ÷ 878 = 2.8, rounded up to 3 nodes — the main router plus two satellites.

Frequently asked questions

Why not trust the “covers 5,000 sq ft” box claim?

Those figures assume open space with clear line of sight. Interior walls, appliances, floors and neighboring networks all cut range, so a node rated for 1,500 sq ft often delivers strong Wi-Fi over closer to 800–1,000 sq ft in a real home. Derating gives a more reliable node count.

Should extra nodes use a wired backhaul?

If you can run Ethernet between nodes, do it — wired backhaul removes the wireless hop that otherwise halves throughput on each satellite, and it makes node placement far more forgiving. Where wiring is impossible, keep nodes within solid signal range of each other.

Is more nodes always better?

Up to a point. Too many nodes on wireless backhaul can add overhead and interference, and devices may cling to a distant node. Aim for enough coverage with strong node-to-node links rather than blanketing every room with hardware.
