How it works

Total load = monitor weight × monitors · Fit if arm min ≤ total load ≤ arm max · Headroom = arm max − total load

A monitor arm — especially a gas-spring one — is rated for a weight range, not just a maximum. Below the minimum the spring pushes the screen up on its own and will not stay put; above the maximum it sags and cannot be tensioned to hold position. Comparing the panel weight (without its desk stand, which you remove) against that range tells you whether the arm can balance it, and the headroom to the top of the range shows how much margin you have for a heavier screen later.

Worked example

A 6 kg monitor on an arm rated 3–9 kg sits comfortably inside the range, with 9 − 6 = 3 kg of headroom to the maximum. Mount two of those on a single 3–9 kg arm, though, and the 12 kg total is 3 kg over the limit — you need a heavier-duty arm.

Frequently asked questions

Why do arms have a minimum weight, not just a maximum?

Gas-spring arms counterbalance the screen with spring force set for a load range. A monitor lighter than the minimum is over-sprung, so the arm floats upward and will not hold a low position. Mechanical spring and cheaper arms behave similarly.

Do I include the desk stand weight?

No. You remove the factory desk stand and bolt the VESA plate straight to the arm, so use the weight of the panel plus the VESA bracket only — often listed separately from the boxed weight in the specs.

Can one arm hold two monitors?

Only a dual-mount arm rated for the combined weight. Add both panels together and compare against the arm’s maximum; two mid-size monitors easily exceed a single-monitor arm’s limit.
