How it works

Monthly cost = payment + insurance + fuel + maintenance + registration ÷ 12 + parking · Income share = monthly cost ÷ monthly income

The car payment is only the headline; insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration and parking often add up to as much again. Summing them into one monthly figure shows the real cost of keeping a car on the road and lets you check it against your income. A common budgeting guideline keeps total transportation costs — not just the payment — under about 20% of gross income.

Worked example

A $450 payment plus $130 insurance, $150 fuel, $60 maintenance, $17 of registration ($200 a year) and no parking totals about $807 a month, or $9,680 a year. Against a $5,000 monthly income that is roughly 16% — within the 20% transportation guideline.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for a car each month?

A common rule keeps total transportation costs — payment, insurance, fuel, maintenance and fees — under 20% of gross monthly income, with the loan payment alone near 10–15%. Lower percentages leave more room for saving and other goals.

What car costs do people forget to budget?

Beyond the payment and fuel, drivers routinely underestimate insurance, routine maintenance and tires, annual registration or property tax, and parking or tolls. Averaging the yearly items into a monthly figure prevents surprise bills.

Does this include depreciation?

No — this budgets the cash you spend each month. Depreciation is a real cost but not a monthly bill; to capture it, use a total cost-of-ownership or cost-per-mile calculation alongside this monthly budget.
