Moving Budget Calculator
Total the real cost of a move — movers, truck, supplies, deposits and travel — and add a contingency buffer so nothing surprises you.
How it works
Base = movers + truck + supplies + deposits + travel · Total = base × (1 + contingency%)
Moves blow budgets because the obvious costs — movers and a truck — are only part of the picture. Deposits and first-month rent are frequently the largest single line, and small items like supplies, tips, fuel and a night of lodging quietly add up. A contingency buffer of roughly 10% absorbs the last-minute extras almost every move produces, so the final bill does not exceed what you set aside.
Worked example
Movers $1,200, truck $400, supplies $150, deposits $2,000 and travel $250 total $4,000 of known costs. A 10% contingency adds $400, giving a safe moving budget of $4,400.
Frequently asked questions
What move cost do people most often forget?
Deposits and first-month rent at the new place, plus utility hook-up fees. These can dwarf the moving-day costs and are easy to leave out of a "how much will the move cost" estimate.
Why include a contingency buffer?
Almost every move surfaces an unplanned cost — an extra box run, a longer truck rental, a tip, a parking fee. A 5–15% buffer keeps those from pushing you over budget.
How can I cut moving costs?
Move mid-month and mid-week for lower rates, source free boxes, declutter before you pack so there is less to move, and get several mover quotes to compare.
