How it works

Stay monthly = current rent × (1 + increase%) · Stay cost = stay monthly × months · Move cost = new rent × months + moving costs · Savings = stay − move · Break-even = moving costs ÷ (stay monthly − new rent)

A cheaper apartment is not automatically cheaper once you count the one-time cost of moving — movers, deposits, application fees and time off. This calculator compares total spend over a window you choose and finds the break-even month: the point where the monthly rent savings finally cover the cost of the move. Below break-even you have lost money; beyond it, moving pays.

Worked example

Staying means a 5% bump on $1,600 to $1,680 a month; over 12 months that is $20,160. Moving to $1,450 costs $17,400 in rent plus $2,500 to move = $19,900 — saving $260 in year one. The $80-a-month gap plus... at $230 monthly savings versus the raised rent, the $2,500 move breaks even in about 10.9 months.

Frequently asked questions

What should I include in moving costs?

Everything one-time: movers or a truck rental, the new security deposit and first-month premium, application and pet fees, utility hookups, and the value of your time off work. Underestimating these is the most common mistake.

What is the break-even month?

It is moving costs divided by the monthly rent savings — how long the lower rent must run to repay the move. If the new place costs more per month than staying, there is no break-even and moving only adds cost.

Should I always move if it saves money?

The dollars are one input. Commute, space, neighborhood and the hassle of moving all matter. Use the break-even to see how long you must stay in the new place for the financial case to hold.
