Net Metering Credit Calculator
Estimate your monthly net metering bill: value of exported solar, cost of imported grid power, and the net credit or amount owed.
How it works
Import cost = imported × import rate · Export credit = exported × export rate · Net bill = import cost − export credit + fixed charge
Net metering nets the power you draw from the grid against the power you push back. Under classic 1:1 net metering the export rate equals the retail import rate, so a kWh out cancels a kWh in. Newer net-billing tariffs credit exports at a lower rate, which is why this calculator lets you set the two rates separately — the gap between them, plus any fixed monthly charge, is what keeps a bill even when you export more than you import.
Worked example
You export 300 kWh and import 250 kWh. Imports cost 250 × $0.18 = $45; exports earn 300 × $0.09 = $27. Net energy is $45 − $27 = $18, plus a $12 fixed charge, for a $30 net bill — even though you exported more kilowatt-hours than you used, because exports are credited at half the import rate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between net metering and net billing?
True net metering credits exports at the full retail rate (1:1), so set both rates equal. Net billing credits exports at a lower avoided-cost or wholesale rate — enter that lower figure as the export rate to see how it changes your bill.
Why do I still owe money if I exported more than I imported?
When exports are credited below the import rate, more kilowatt-hours out does not guarantee a lower dollar total. Fixed monthly charges also apply regardless of your energy balance, so a small bill can remain even with net-positive production.
Do unused credits roll over?
Many utilities bank surplus credits month to month and true up annually, but rollover rules and cash-out policies vary widely by utility and state. Check your specific tariff — this calculator estimates a single month in isolation.
