How it works

night hours = minutes of the shift that fall between the night start and night end (the window may cross midnight) ÷ 60 · day hours = shift hours − night hours · pay = shift hours × rate + night hours × rate × premium %

Many contracts, collective agreements and labor codes pay a premium for night work, defined as hours within a fixed window — commonly 22:00 to 06:00, though 21:00–06:00, 23:00–07:00 and 19:00–06:00 are also used. Only the part of the shift inside the window earns the premium, so a 18:00–02:00 shift has four night hours, not eight. The ILO Night Work Convention (No. 171) defines night work as a period of at least seven consecutive hours including midnight to 05:00. Unpaid breaks are not deducted here; subtract them from whichever part of the shift they fall in.

Worked example

A shift from 18:00 to 02:00 lasts 8 hours. With a 22:00–06:00 night window, the hours from 22:00 to 02:00 are night work: 4.00 h night and 4.00 h day. At $20/h with a 25% night premium the premium is $20.00 and the shift pays $180.00.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate night hours in a shift?

Count only the part of the shift inside the night window. For 18:00–02:00 with a 22:00–06:00 window, the night hours are 22:00–02:00, which is 4 hours.

What hours count as night work?

It depends on your contract or local law: 22:00–06:00 is common, but some places use 21:00–06:00 or 19:00–06:00. Enter your own window.

How is night premium pay calculated?

Multiply the night hours by your hourly rate and the premium percentage. Four night hours at $20/h with a 25% premium add $20 to the shift.

Does the calculator handle shifts past midnight?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as ending the next day.
