Night Out Alcohol Calories Calculator
Add up the calories from a night of drinks — beer, wine, spirits and cocktails — and see the exercise it would take to burn them.
How it works
Total = beers×153 + wine×125 + shots×97 + cocktails×250 (kcal) · Run min = total ÷ 600 × 60
Alcohol carries 7 calories per gram — nearly as much as fat — and mixers, syrups and juices pile on more, which is why cocktails are so calorie-dense. This tool uses typical values for standard servings and sums them, then translates the total into rough exercise equivalents so the "empty calories" feel concrete. Real drinks vary a lot, so treat the figure as a ballpark rather than an exact count.
Worked example
3 beers (3 × 153 = 459), 1 wine (125), 1 shot (97) and 1 cocktail (250) total 931 kcal. At a running burn of ~600 kcal/hr, that is 931 ÷ 600 × 60 ≈ 93 minutes of running, or about 3.3 pizza slices.
Frequently asked questions
Why is alcohol so calorie-dense?
Pure alcohol provides about 7 kcal per gram, well above the 4 kcal of carbs or protein. It also offers little nutrition, and mixers add sugar calories on top — hence the "empty calories" label.
Do these calories count toward weight gain?
They can. The body prioritises metabolising alcohol, which can slow the burning of other fuels, and drinking often comes with late-night snacking. The exact effect depends on your overall diet and activity.
Are light or low-carb drinks much better?
They cut some calories — a light beer or a spirit with soda water is lower than a sugary cocktail — but the alcohol itself still contributes. Portion and quantity usually matter more than the specific drink.
