How it works

English: split the whole part into groups of three digits, name each group (hundreds, then tens and ones) and add its scale word — thousand, million, billion, trillion · Indian English: last three digits, then pairs — thousand, lakh (10⁵), crore (10⁷) · Spanish: groups of six — mil inside each group, then millón (10⁶) and billón (10¹²) · Cheque: whole amount in words + cents as ⁿⁿ/100 · Ordinal: change the last word (one → first, twenty → twentieth)

English number words are built in groups of three digits: within each group you name the hundreds, then the tens and ones, and after the group you attach its scale word. American usage writes 1,234 as “one thousand two hundred thirty-four”; British usage adds “and” before the last part: “one thousand two hundred and thirty-four”. The Indian system groups the last three digits and then pairs, so 12,34,567 is “twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven”, and the calculator uses it automatically for rupee amounts. Spanish works in groups of six with the long scale — mil millones is a US billion and un billón is a US trillion — and changes “uno” to “un” or “una” to agree with the noun: veintiún pesos, veintiuna libras, un millón de pesos. For cheques the whole amount is spelled out and the cents are written as a fraction of 100, for example “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”; Mexican peso cheques end in “56/100 M.N.” and Indian cheques read “Rupees … only”. Decimals can be read digit by digit (point five six), as a number (point fifty-six) or as a fraction (fifty-six hundredths), and ordinals turn the last word into first, second, twentieth and so on.

Worked example

1234.56 splits into the groups 1 | 234, giving “one thousand two hundred thirty-four”, and the decimals are read “point five six”. On a US cheque the amount line is “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”, and in words it is “one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents”. In Spanish it is “mil doscientos treinta y cuatro pesos con cincuenta y seis centavos”, or “Mil doscientos treinta y cuatro pesos 56/100 M.N.” on a Mexican cheque. ₹1,25,000 is “Rupees one lakh twenty-five thousand only”, and 23 as an ordinal is “twenty-third” (vigésimo tercero).

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a check amount in words?

Spell out the whole dollars and write the cents as a fraction of 100, then the currency: $1,234.56 is “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars”. With no cents write “and 00/100”. Choose Check / cheque writing for this layout in dollars, euros, pounds, rupees, pesos or yen.

How are the decimals read out?

Choose how in “Read decimals as”: digit by digit after “point” (0.56 → point five six), as one number (point fifty-six), or as a fraction (fifty-six hundredths). Digit by digit is how numbers are usually read aloud; the fraction form is common in legal and school writing.

Should I use “and” in numbers like 105?

In American English “and” is usually left out of whole numbers (one hundred five) and kept for the decimal or cents part. British English puts it in: one hundred and five. Choose English (UK) for the British form.

How do lakh and crore work?

A lakh is 100,000 and a crore is 10,000,000. Indian numbering groups the last three digits, then pairs: 1,25,00,000 is one crore twenty-five lakh. The calculator uses this automatically for rupee amounts, or always if you choose Indian in More options.

How do you write numbers in words in Spanish?

Numbers up to 29 are one word (veintiséis), then tens join with “y” (treinta y dos). Hundreds are ciento, doscientos… and 100 alone is cien. Uno becomes un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine one: veintiún dólares, doscientas una libras. A US billion is mil millones in Spanish; un billón is a million millions.

How large a number can it handle?

Whole numbers up to just under one quadrillion (10¹⁵) and up to 12 decimal places. Negative numbers start with “negative” (or “menos” in Spanish). Spanish ordinal words are given up to 9,999.
