How it works
°C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9 · °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32
The standard Fahrenheit–Celsius conversion, applied to oven settings. Recipes round the results to the marks ovens actually have — 350°F becomes 175 or 180°C, not 176.7. Gas marks are the old British scale: mark 1 is 275°F and each step adds 25°F.
Worked example
350°F − 32 = 318, × 5⁄9 = 176.7 — so 350°F ≈ 175–180°C on a dial, which is gas mark 4. Going the other way, 200°C × 9⁄5 + 32 = 392 ≈ 400°F.
Frequently asked questions
Why do recipes round the converted number?
Home ovens swing ±25°F around the set point during a bake anyway, so 177 vs 180°C is noise. Set the nearest mark and trust the cues in the recipe.
When must I use the fan adjustment?
Whenever a conventional-oven recipe meets a fan-forced oven: moving air transfers heat faster, so cut roughly 25°F / 15°C (or shorten the time about 10–15%). Many UK and Australian recipes list fan temperatures already — check before double-adjusting.
What if my oven runs hot or cold?
Very common — thermostats drift. A $10 standalone oven thermometer tells you the true offset; then you correct every recipe by the same amount.
