Overtime Pay Calculator
Calculate regular pay, overtime pay and total pay from an hourly rate, hours and an overtime multiplier.
How it works
Regular pay = rate × regular hours · Overtime pay = rate × multiplier × overtime hours · Total = regular + overtime
Regular hours are paid at the base rate; overtime hours are paid at the base rate times a multiplier, most commonly 1.5 (time and a half). The two are added for total pay. Under the US federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek.
Worked example
At $25 an hour, 40 regular hours pay $1,000. Eight overtime hours at 1.5× ($37.50) add $300, for $1,300 total that week.
Frequently asked questions
When is overtime legally required?
Under the US federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime or higher multipliers.
Is overtime based on 40 hours a week or 8 a day?
Federal law uses a 40-hour workweek. A few states, such as California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a single day — check your state’s rules, which can be stricter than federal.
What is double time?
Double time pays 2× the regular rate, often for holidays or very long shifts. It is not required by federal law; it comes from state rules or employer and union agreements. Set the multiplier to 2 to calculate it.
