How it works

Bucket per paycheck = paycheck × (bucket share ÷ total shares) · Annual = paycheck × pay periods

Budgeting per paycheck instead of per month solves a timing problem: bills and pay rarely line up neatly, and monthly budgets can leave you flush right after payday and short by the end. This tool takes your target percentages, normalizes them so they always sum to 100% even if you enter shares that do not, and converts them into exact dollar amounts to move the moment each check arrives. Automating those transfers — the "pay yourself first" idea — is the reliable way to make the savings share actually stick.

Worked example

A $2,000 biweekly paycheck (26 a year) with a 50/30/20 split allocates $1,000 to needs, $600 to wants and $400 to savings each check. That $400 every two weeks is $10,400 saved over the year.

Frequently asked questions

Why budget per paycheck instead of monthly?

Because bills arrive throughout the month while pay arrives on a schedule. Allocating each check as it lands keeps you from overspending early in the month and scrambling later, and it works especially well with biweekly pay where two months a year contain a third paycheck.

What if my percentages do not add up to 100?

The calculator normalizes them for you — it divides each share by the total you entered, so 50/30/20 and 5/3/2 produce the same split. Enter whatever weightings feel right and the dollars will always sum to the full paycheck.

How does biweekly pay create "extra" paychecks?

Biweekly pay means 26 checks a year, but most monthly bills assume 24. Two months each year contain three paychecks — a great opportunity to make an extra savings transfer or debt payment without touching your normal budget.
