How it works
Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²; value = price ÷ area
Pizza area scales with the square of the diameter, so a 16-inch is not a third bigger than a 12-inch — it is nearly twice the pizza. Price per square inch reveals the true deal.
Worked example
A 16" pizza has 201 in² vs 113 in² for a 12" — often far better value even at a higher price.
Frequently asked questions
Why square the diameter?
Because area = πr². Doubling the diameter quadruples the pizza, which is why large sizes are usually cheaper per bite.
What about crust?
Thick crust and large borders reduce edible area. This compares total surface, so adjust if one is all crust.
