How it works
Amount financed = cost − down · Payment = P·r ÷ (1 − (1+r)^−n), r = APR ÷ 12, n = months · Total interest = payment × n − amount financed
Pool loans are usually unsecured personal loans or a home-equity option, financed over 5 to 20 years. An in-ground pool is a large, mostly non-recoverable expense — it rarely adds its full cost to a home’s value — so the term and rate you accept drive how much the pool ultimately costs. A longer term eases the monthly payment but can double the interest, and there are ongoing costs for chemicals, energy and maintenance on top of the loan.
Worked example
On a $55,000 pool with $5,000 down, you finance $50,000. At 9.75% over 12 years (144 payments), the payment is about $580.85 a month; you repay roughly $83,642 in total, about $33,642 of it interest.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to finance a pool?
Common options are an unsecured pool loan, a home-equity loan or HELOC, and cash. Home-equity options usually offer the lowest rate but use your house as collateral; unsecured pool loans fund faster but cost more. Compare total interest, not just the payment.
Does a pool add value to my home?
Sometimes, but rarely its full cost, and it varies by climate and neighborhood. Treat a pool primarily as a lifestyle purchase rather than an investment when deciding how much to finance.
What ongoing costs come with a pool?
Beyond the loan, budget for chemicals, electricity for the pump and heater, water, occasional repairs and possible higher insurance. These can run well over a thousand dollars a year.
