Power Bank Charge Calculator
How many times will a power bank charge your phone? Convert the power bank’s mAh at 3.7 V and the phone’s mAh to watt-hours, apply real conversion losses and get full charges and top-ups.
How it works
power bank Wh = mAh × cell V ÷ 1,000 · usable Wh = Wh × efficiency · phone Wh = phone mAh × phone V ÷ 1,000 · full charges = usable Wh ÷ phone Wh · top-ups = usable Wh ÷ (phone Wh × (100 − start%) ÷ 100)
A power bank’s mAh rating refers to its internal lithium cells at about 3.7 V, but it delivers power at 5 V or more through USB, and the phone then converts it back down to charge its own battery. Each step loses energy as heat, so only about 60–80% of the rated energy reaches the phone. Comparing watt-hours rather than mAh removes the voltage confusion: that is why a 10,000 mAh power bank charges a 4,500 mAh phone about 1.5 times, not 2.2 times.
Worked example
10,000 mAh × 3.7 V = 37.0 Wh rated; × 70% = 25.9 Wh usable. The phone holds 4,500 mAh × 3.85 V = 17.33 Wh, so 25.9 ÷ 17.33 = 1.5 full charges — or 1.9 top-ups from 20% to 100% (each needing 13.86 Wh). The usable energy equals 6,727 mAh at the phone’s voltage.

Frequently asked questions
How many times can a 10,000 mAh power bank charge my phone?
Typically 1.5 to 2 times for a phone with a 4,000–5,000 mAh battery. Divide the usable watt-hours (about 70% of rated) by the phone battery’s watt-hours.
Why does my power bank deliver less than its mAh rating?
The rating is at the cell voltage (3.7 V). Stepping up to USB voltage, cable losses, heat and the phone’s own charging circuit typically waste 20–40% of the energy.
How many times will a 20,000 mAh power bank charge an iPhone?
About 3 to 4 full charges for a 3,300–4,400 mAh iPhone battery: 20,000 × 3.7 = 74 Wh × 70% = 51.8 Wh, divided by 13–17 Wh per phone charge.
Can I take my power bank on a plane?
Yes, in your carry-on only. Up to 100 Wh (about 27,000 mAh at 3.7 V) needs no approval; 100–160 Wh needs airline approval. Use the mAh to Wh converter to check yours.
