How it works

salary in international dollars = salary ÷ your PPP factor · equivalent salary = international dollars × other PPP factor · PPP exchange rate = other PPP ÷ your PPP · price level there = PPP exchange rate ÷ market exchange rate

Purchasing power parity (PPP) conversion factors, published by the World Bank’s International Comparison Program and the OECD, say how many units of a country’s currency buy the same basket of goods and services as one US dollar buys in the United States. Converting a salary with PPP factors instead of the market exchange rate shows what you would need to earn abroad to keep the same standard of living. When the PPP exchange rate is below the market rate, the other country is cheaper; above it, more expensive. PPP covers the whole economy, so your own basket (rent, imported goods) may differ.

Worked example

You earn 60,000 in a country with a PPP factor of 1 and compare with a country whose PPP factor is 10 and whose currency trades at 17 per unit of yours. Your salary is 60,000 international dollars, so the equivalent salary there is 600,000 — while the market-rate conversion is 1,020,000. The PPP rate (10.0000) is 58.82% of the market rate, so living costs there are cheaper than in your country.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PPP salary conversion?

It converts a salary so that it buys the same goods and services in another country, using purchasing power parity factors instead of the exchange rate.

Where do I find PPP conversion factors?

The World Bank publishes them as indicator PA.NUS.PPP ("PPP conversion factor, GDP, LCU per international $"), and the OECD and IMF publish similar series. Use the same year and source for both countries.

Why is the PPP salary lower than the exchange-rate conversion?

Because prices — especially for local services and housing — are lower in many countries than the exchange rate suggests. You need fewer local currency units to live the same way.

Is PPP accurate for an individual move?

It is a good first estimate, but PPP measures an average national basket. Rent in a capital city, private schooling or imported goods can make your own cost of living very different; a city cost-of-living index can refine it.
