How it works

days to go = due date − today · how far along = 280 − days to go · full term marker = due date − 21 days (37 weeks).

The countdown is simply the number of days from today to the due date, expressed as weeks and days. Because the due date is 40 weeks (280 days) from the last period, subtracting the days remaining also tells you how far along you are now. Full term is reached at 37 weeks, three weeks before the due date, and only about one baby in twenty actually arrives on the exact due date — most come within a couple of weeks either side.

Worked example

With a due date of October 8, 2026 counted from September 15, 2026, there are 23 days — 3 weeks 2 days — to go, which puts you around 36 weeks 5 days along, about 92% of the way to 40 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How many babies are born on their due date?

Only about 4–5%. The due date is a single estimated point in a normal range; most births happen within roughly two weeks either side of it.

What does “full term” mean in the countdown?

Full term is 39–40 weeks, but from 37 weeks a baby is considered term and lungs and organs are usually ready. The countdown flags the 37-week point as well as the due date.

The count says I am past due — is that a problem?

Going a little past the due date is common and usually fine, but pregnancies past 41–42 weeks are monitored closely. Follow your provider’s guidance on checks and any induction.
