How it works

quarter = ⌊(months since fiscal-year start) ÷ 3⌋ + 1 · each quarter spans three calendar months

A quarter is a three-month block of the fiscal year. With a January start (the calendar year), Q1 is Jan–Mar, Q2 Apr–Jun, Q3 Jul–Sep and Q4 Oct–Dec. Moving the fiscal-year start shifts every quarter to match — an April start makes Apr–Jun the first quarter, which is common for governments and many companies. The calculator counts the months from your chosen start, divides into blocks of three, and reports the exact quarter dates plus how many days into it your date sits.

Worked example

10 Aug 2026 with a January fiscal year: August is the 8th month, so 7 months have passed since January — 7 ÷ 3 rounds down to 2, giving Q3. Q3 runs 1 Jul to 30 Sep 2026, and 10 August is day 41 of 92.

Frequently asked questions

How do fiscal quarters differ from calendar quarters?

Calendar quarters always start in January. A fiscal year can start in another month — April, July or October are common — which shifts what counts as Q1 through Q4 while keeping each quarter three months long.

Why do companies use non-January fiscal years?

To align reporting with their business cycle. Retailers often end the year after the holidays, and many governments run April to March, so their Q1 is April to June.

What does "days into the quarter" mean?

It counts from the first day of the quarter to your date inclusively, so the first day of the quarter is day 1. It helps gauge how much of a quarter’s target period has elapsed.
