How it works

Needed = goal − current × (1 + r)^n · Monthly = needed × r ÷ [(1 + r)^n − 1], where r is the monthly return and n the number of months

To hit a fixed goal you solve the future-value-of-an-annuity formula backwards for the payment. First grow any current balance forward — it does part of the work for free — then find the contribution that fills the remaining gap. Because returns compound, a longer horizon dramatically cuts the monthly amount required: starting earlier is almost always cheaper than saving harder later.

Worked example

To reach $50,000 in 5 years at 6%, a $5,000 starting balance grows to about $6,744, leaving roughly $43,256 to fund. That requires about $620 a month, of which you contribute around $37,200 and growth supplies the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I assume?

Match it to the account: a few percent for cash and CDs, more for a diversified stock-and-bond portfolio. Use a conservative figure for short-term goals, since there is little time to recover from a bad year.

What if my current savings already cover the goal?

If the existing balance grows to meet or exceed the goal on its own, the calculator shows a required monthly saving of zero — you are already on track.

Should I save monthly or in one lump sum?

Regular monthly saving is easier to sustain and smooths out market timing. A lump sum invested earlier has more time to compound, so if you have the cash it can reach the goal with a smaller total outlay.
