How it works

ROA = net income ÷ total assets × 100

Return on assets shows how much profit a company squeezes from its entire asset base — plant, inventory, cash and everything else — regardless of how those assets were financed. Because it counts all assets rather than just equity, ROA is unaffected by leverage, making it a cleaner read on operating efficiency than ROE. It varies widely by industry: asset-light software firms post high ROAs, while capital-intensive utilities and manufacturers run low ones, so compare within a sector.

Worked example

A company earning $10,000,000,000 on $120,000,000,000 of total assets has an ROA of 10,000,000,000 ÷ 120,000,000,000 × 100 ≈ 8.33% — it generates about 8.3 cents of profit for every dollar of assets it holds.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROA?

Above 5% is often seen as decent and above 10% as strong, but it is highly industry-dependent. Compare a company against direct peers rather than an absolute benchmark.

How does ROA differ from ROE?

ROA divides profit by all assets; ROE divides it by equity alone. ROA ignores how the assets were funded, so it is not distorted by debt the way ROE can be.

Why is ROA low for some industries?

Capital-intensive businesses like utilities, airlines and manufacturers need huge asset bases to operate, which drags the ratio down even when they are well run.
