How it works

Driving time = Σ (leg distance ÷ leg speed) × (1 + traffic buffer) · Days = ceil(driving time ÷ max hours per day), driving split evenly · Stops per day = ceil(daily driving ÷ stop interval) − 1 · Stop interval = the shorter of your rest interval and range ÷ speed · Total time = driving + stops × minutes + meal breaks × minutes · Arrival = departure + total time (+ overnight breaks) + time-zone change

Map apps quote driving time at a steady speed, but a real trip adds fuel, food and bathroom stops, slow traffic and, on long hauls, nights on the road. This calculator divides each leg’s distance by a realistic average speed — always lower than the limit once towns, merges and trucks are counted — and adds an optional traffic buffer. It then splits the driving evenly across days so no day exceeds your limit, places a stop each time your chosen interval passes (none is needed on arrival), lets a meal break replace one of each day’s stops, and spaces stops more tightly if your fuel tank or EV range runs out first. With a departure date and time it builds a day-by-day itinerary: each later day starts at your usual departure time, or after your minimum overnight break if you arrived late. The final arrival can be shifted into the destination’s time zone. Optional fuel economy, fuel price and lodging rate add a quick trip budget; for a detailed fuel and per-person split, use the fuel trip cost calculator.

Worked example

600 miles at 60 mph is 10 hours of driving. With a 9-hour daily limit the drive is split into 2 days of 5 hours. Stopping every 2.5 hours means one stop on each day (ceil(5 ÷ 2.5) − 1 = 1), and the default single meal break replaces it, so each day has one 45-minute meal stop: 10 h of driving + 1 h 30 min of stops = 11 h 30 min on the road. Leaving at 8:00 am, day 1 ends at 1:45 pm and day 2 runs from 8:00 am to 1:45 pm. At 25 mpg the trip uses 24 gallons, about $84 at $3.50 a gallon.

Frequently asked questions

What average speed should I use?

Use less than the speed limit. On interstates 60–65 mph is realistic once you count merges, construction and slow trucks; on mixed highways and back roads 45–55 mph is closer to the truth. If part of the route is slow — a mountain pass or a city — add it as its own leg with “@ speed” in the route box.

How often should I stop on a long drive?

Road-safety advice is a break at least every two hours (roughly every 100 miles or 150 km) and swapping drivers when you can. The calculator places a stop each time your interval passes, but not on arrival, and if your fuel or battery range is shorter it spaces stops by range instead.

How many hours a day is safe to drive?

Most guidance caps a single driver at about 8–9 hours of actual driving per day, less at night or in bad weather. The days-needed figure splits the driving evenly so no day goes over your limit; turn on “Drive straight through” only when drivers take turns.

How is the arrival time worked out?

Departure time plus the day’s driving and stop time. On a multi-day trip each new day starts at your usual departure time, or after your minimum overnight break if you arrived late, and the final arrival is shifted by the time-zone change you enter — so a 3 pm arrival on a drive from Los Angeles to New York (+3 h) shows as 6 pm local time.

Does it include the drive home?

Turn on “Round trip” and the return drive is added straight after the outbound one, with the same stops and daily limit. Days you spend at the destination are not included.
