How it works

Governing limit = min(roof limit, rack limit) · Cargo = governing − crossbars − accessories

Two separate ratings cap a roof load: the vehicle’s dynamic roof limit and the rack system’s own capacity, and you must obey the lower of the two. From that governing figure you subtract the weight of the crossbars, feet and any box or carrier, because those consume capacity before your gear does. The manual’s figure is a dynamic limit for driving; a stationary roof (for a roof-top tent, say) can often bear far more, which is a different number entirely.

Worked example

A car with a 165 lb dynamic roof limit and a 165 lb rack limit is governed by 165 lb. Subtract 12 lb of crossbars and a 30 lb box and you have 165 − 42 = 123 lb left for cargo.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can I put on my roof rack?

Take the lower of your vehicle’s dynamic roof rating and the rack’s rated capacity, then subtract the weight of the bars and any carrier or box. Whatever remains is your safe cargo weight while driving.

What is the difference between dynamic and static roof limits?

The dynamic limit applies while the vehicle is moving and is the one in the owner’s manual — usually 100–200 lb for a car. The static limit, for a parked vehicle with a roof-top tent, is often much higher because there are no cornering and braking forces.

Do the crossbars count toward the limit?

Yes. The rack hardware, feet and any box or mount all sit on the roof and count against the rating, so subtract their weight first. Heavy aftermarket carriers can eat a surprising share of the allowance.
