How it works

Nearest = round(value ÷ step) × step · Down = floor(value ÷ step) × step · Up = ceil(value ÷ step) × step

Rounding to the nearest 5, 10 or 100 works by scaling the number down by that step, rounding to a whole number, then scaling back up — which snaps the value onto the nearest multiple of the step. A value exactly halfway rounds up under the standard rule. Seeing the round-down and round-up multiples together shows the two nearest “nice” numbers your value sits between.

Worked example

Round 1,237 to the nearest 100. Divide by 100 to get 12.37, round to 12, multiply back to 1,200. The value sits between 1,200 below and 1,300 above, and 1,237 is closer to 1,200.

Frequently asked questions

How does a number exactly halfway round?

By the common “round half up” rule this calculator uses, a value exactly on the midpoint rounds to the higher multiple — so 1,250 to the nearest 100 becomes 1,300.

Why would I round to the nearest 5 or 25?

Rounding to 5 is common for cash without pennies or for tidy tallies; 25 suits quarter-based prices and scores. Any step gives a cleaner, easier-to-communicate figure than the raw number.

Can I round decimals this way too?

Yes. Choosing “1” rounds to the nearest whole number. The same divide-round-multiply method extends to decimal steps, though this tool lists the common whole-number steps.
