Rowing 500m Split Calculator
Convert an erg or on-water row into a 500m split pace and the Concept2 power in watts, from your distance and total time.
How it works
500m split = total time ÷ (distance ÷ 500) · pace = seconds per metre · Power (W) = 2.80 ÷ pace³
Rowers pace by the time it would take to cover 500 m at the current effort — the "split" — regardless of the actual distance. The Concept2 ergometer relates pace to power by watts = 2.80 ÷ (seconds-per-metre)³, so halving your split time raises power roughly eightfold. That cubic relationship is why small split improvements demand large jumps in power.
Worked example
A 2000 m row in 7:30 (450 s): split = 450 ÷ (2000 ÷ 500) = 450 ÷ 4 = 112.5 s = 1:52.5/500m. Pace = 450 ÷ 2000 = 0.225 s/m, so power = 2.80 ÷ 0.225³ = 2.80 ÷ 0.01139 ≈ 246 W.

Frequently asked questions
What does the 500m split mean?
It is the time you would take to row 500 m at your current pace. A 1:50 split means every 500 m takes 1 minute 50 seconds, so a 2000 m piece at that split takes 7:20.
How is the power figure calculated?
It uses the Concept2 formula, watts = 2.80 ÷ pace³, where pace is seconds per metre. It matches the number the erg’s monitor shows for a steady effort.
Why does dropping my split feel so hard?
Power scales with the cube of pace, so shaving a few seconds off your split requires a big increase in watts. That cubic cost is the core challenge of rowing faster.
