How it works

pace per km = time ÷ distance(km) · pace per mile = time ÷ distance(mi) · split(k) = pace per km × k

A goal time only becomes runnable once you know the pace it demands and can see it laid out kilometre by kilometre. Even splits — the same pace every km — are the most efficient way to race a flat course, so this table is your reference on the watch. Because a mile is 1.609 km, your per-mile number is always the larger figure; runners in the US pace by it while most of the rest of the world paces by the km.

Worked example

A 10K goal of 50:00 is 3,000 seconds over 10 km, so 3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 s = 5:00 per km. In miles that is 3,000 ÷ 6.214 = 8:03 per mile, and the average speed is 12.0 km/h. Each kilometre split lands 5:00 apart: 5:00, 10:00, 15:00 … 50:00 at the line.

Frequently asked questions

Should I really run even splits?

On a flat course, even or slightly negative splits (a touch faster in the back half) waste the least energy. On hills, hold effort rather than pace — you will run the ups slower and the downs faster than the table shows and still hit the total.

Why is my per-mile pace slower-looking than my per-km pace?

A mile is longer than a kilometre, so it takes more time to cover — 5:00 per km is the same speed as 8:03 per mile. Compare like with like; never mix the two on one watch.

How precise are these splits?

They are exact arithmetic for even pacing. Real races add a few seconds for tangents, aid stations and GPS drift, so treat the last kilometre as your buffer rather than counting on a photo finish.
