RV Campsite Fit Calculator (Rig Length vs Site Length, Back-In Clearance, Turning & Height)

Check whether your truck-and-trailer or motorhome-and-toad combination fits a campsite: total hitched length vs the listed site length, whether you can leave the tow vehicle attached, back-in swing clearance for a trailer, road width needed to turn, and low-clearance limits for the route.

How it works

combined length = RV + tow vehicle (+2 ft ball hitch; −4 ft fifth-wheel bed overlap) · fits hitched if combined ≤ site; fits unhitched if RV ≤ site · back-in swing road ≈ 0.75 × trailer length (0.9 × motorhome) · clear width = 8.5 ft body + slide + walkway

Campground listings give a site length, but they rarely say whether it means the pad, the pad plus the parking spur, or the whole rig — and reservation systems ask for "equipment length" in different ways. The safe method is to know your real hitched length and your RV's length alone, compare both to the site, and plan to unhitch when only the RV fits. Back-in sites need road width to swing a trailer, older loops were built for much shorter rigs, and height limits on the way in matter more than at the site. This calculator turns your measurements into a yes, an unhitch-first, or a no.

Worked example

A 32 ft travel trailer behind a 20 ft crew-cab pickup is about 54 ft hitched, so a 45 ft back-in site only fits once unhitched — and the 13 ft of pad left over will not take the 20 ft truck, so it parks in overflow. Backing a 32 ft trailer through 90° wants about 24 ft of road, so the 20 ft loop road means a few pull-ups. At 11.5 ft tall the rig is typical: watch for parkway and tree-canopy limits; the 3 ft slide needs 11.5 ft of clear width plus a walkway.

Frequently asked questions

Does the site length include my truck?

Usually not — most systems list the pad or the RV space; some list total drivable length. When it matters (you would rather not unhitch), call the park and ask whether the tow vehicle can stay on the pad. Recreation.gov "equipment length" means the RV only.

How much road do I need to back a trailer in?

About three-quarters of the trailer length for a comfortable 90° back-in, less with several pull-ups. Approach with the site on the driver's side, turn the wheel toward the side you want the trailer to go (bottom of the wheel), go slowly and use a spotter on the radio.

What campground length is "big rig friendly"?

Sites of 60 ft or more with 25 ft+ roads and pull-throughs; anything over 35 ft should ask about loop roads and tree canopies at state and national parks, many of which were built for 25–30 ft rigs in the 1960s–70s.
