Sauna Heart Rate Zone Calculator
Estimate the heart-rate range heat stress raises you into during a sauna session, using the Karvonen (heart-rate reserve) method.
How it works
Max HR = 208 − 0.7 × age · Zone = resting + (max − resting) × %reserve (Karvonen)
Passive heat raises heart rate because the body pumps more blood to the skin to shed heat, so a sauna produces a cardiovascular response that resembles light-to-moderate exercise. This calculator applies the Karvonen (heart-rate reserve) method to your estimated maximum and resting rates to bracket where a typical session might land. Actual response depends on temperature, humidity, hydration and acclimatisation — a wearable gives the real number.
Worked example
At 35 years old with a resting heart rate of 65 bpm, estimated max HR = 208 − 0.7×35 ≈ 184 bpm, reserve = 119 bpm. A moderate session (50–65% reserve) gives 65 + 119×0.50 = 125 up to 65 + 119×0.65 = 142 bpm.
Frequently asked questions
Does a sauna count as cardio?
It raises heart rate and imposes real cardiovascular strain, and regular sauna use is associated with cardiovascular benefits in observational studies. But it does not train your muscles or build fitness the way exercise does — think of it as a heat stress, not a replacement for training.
Is a high heart rate in the sauna dangerous?
For healthy people a moderate rise is normal. However, heat, dehydration and heart-rate elevation combine to increase strain, so anyone with heart disease, low blood pressure, or who is pregnant should get medical advice first and exit if they feel unwell.
How long should a sauna session last?
Many people use 10–20 minutes at a comfortable temperature, exiting sooner if their heart rate climbs high or they feel dizzy. Hydrate before and after, and cool down gradually rather than standing up abruptly.
