How it works

per week = hours × 7 · per month = hours × 30 · per year = hours × 365 · waking share = hours ÷ 16 × 100

Daily hours multiply out to a week, a month and a year so the running total becomes visible. The waking-hours share assumes a 16-hour day (eight hours of sleep) to show what fraction of your available time screens occupy. The point isn’t to shame a number — it’s to see the total clearly and decide whether the split between purposeful and idle screen time is the one you want.

Worked example

5 hours a day is 35 hours a week, about 150 hours a month and 1,825 hours a year — roughly 76 full 24-hour days, and about 31% of a 16-hour waking day.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as screen time?

That’s up to you — this tool just does the arithmetic on whatever daily figure you enter. Many people separate work screens from leisure screens, since the yearly totals are large either way and the useful question is the mix, not the sum.

How much screen time is too much?

There’s no single healthy number for adults; context matters more than the clock. Common-sense markers are whether screens crowd out sleep, movement, meals or in-person time — if they do, the weekly figure here is a good place to set a target to trim.

How do I actually cut it down?

Track first, then target the largest idle slice. Turning off non-essential notifications, keeping the phone out of the bedroom, and setting app timers each remove a few hours a week — small changes that show up quickly in the yearly total above.
