Slow Motion Calculator (Frame Rate, Playback Speed & Clip Length)

See how slow your footage plays: recording frame rate vs. timeline frame rate gives the slow-motion factor, playback speed, clip length on the timeline, frames recorded and the 180° shutter speed.

How it works

slow-motion factor = recording fps ÷ playback fps · playback speed = playback fps ÷ recording fps × 100% · timeline length = real length × factor · frames = recording fps × real length · 180° shutter = 1 ÷ (2 × recording fps)

Slow motion comes from overcranking: recording more frames per second than the timeline plays back. Every frame is shown, just spread out, so 120 fps conformed to a 24 fps timeline plays at 20% speed — five times slower — without the stutter of software-stretched footage. For natural motion blur use the 180° shutter rule at the recording frame rate (1/240 s at 120 fps), which also needs more light. If you record slower than the timeline (undercranking) the factor is below 1 and the action speeds up.

Worked example

Ten seconds of action recorded at 120 fps and played on a 24 fps timeline is slowed 5.00× to 20.0% speed and lasts 50.00 s. That is 1,200 frames, shot at 1/240 s for the 180° rule.

Frequently asked questions

How slow is 120 fps slow motion?

On a 24 fps timeline 120 fps plays at 20% speed (5× slower); on a 30 fps timeline at 25% (4× slower); on 60 fps at 50%.

What frame rate do I need for 50% slow motion?

Twice your timeline frame rate: 48 or 50 fps for a 24/25 fps edit, 60 fps for a 30 fps edit.

What shutter speed should I use for slow motion?

About 1 ÷ (2 × recording fps): 1/120 s at 60 fps, 1/240 s at 120 fps, 1/500 s at 240 fps. Indoors under mains lighting pick a flicker-safe speed close to that.

Why does my slow motion look choppy?

Usually the clip was recorded at the timeline frame rate and slowed in software, so frames are repeated. Record at a higher frame rate and conform (interpret) the clip to the timeline rate instead.
