How it works

Weight length = size-chart midpoint for your weight (e.g. 63.5 kg → 150 cm, 78.5 kg → 156 cm, 88.5 kg → 160.5 cm, interpolated) · Height length = chart midpoint for your height · Length = 0.7 × weight length + 0.3 × height length, then −4 cm freestyle / +3 freeride / +4 powder, −3 beginner / +2 advanced, −5 volume-shifted / +3 splitboard · Range = centre ± 2 cm · Minimum waist ≈ 251 + 4 × (US men’s boot − 9.5) mm

Snowboard brands size boards mainly by rider weight, because weight is what flexes the board and loads the edges. This calculator takes the middle of a typical retailer size chart for your weight and for your height, then weights the weight-based figure 70/30. If you are heavy or light for your height, it says so. From there it shortens the board for park riding and for beginners, because a shorter board turns more easily. It lengthens it for freeride, carving and powder, where speed and float matter. Volume-shifted shapes are ridden about 5 cm shorter because their extra width keeps the surface area, and splitboards are usually a few centimetres longer. Waist width depends on your boot size. Enter the size in US men’s, US women’s, UK, EU or Mondopoint and the calculator converts it, then gives a minimum waist width. Boots that hang too far over the edges drag in hard turns. You also get a flex rating, starting binding angles, a stance width, a length-by-weight table and the length for each riding style. The brand’s own weight range for a specific model is still the final word.

Worked example

A 178 cm, 78 kg intermediate all-mountain rider with US men’s 10.5 boots: the size chart gives about 155.9 cm for 78 kg and 156 cm for 178 cm. 0.7 × 155.9 + 0.3 × 156 = 155.9 cm. There are no style or ability adjustments, so the centre is 156 cm and the range 154–158 cm. The typical chart range at this weight is 150–162 cm. The waist should be at least 251 + 4 × (10.5 − 9.5) = 255 mm, which is a mid-wide board. A medium flex (4–6 of 10) and bindings at +15° / −6° are a good start.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size my snowboard by height or by weight?

By weight first. A board’s flex and edge hold are designed for a weight range, so a light tall rider and a heavy short rider of the same height need different boards. Height is a useful cross-check, which is why it carries 30% of the result here.

Do women’s boards size differently?

For the same rider weight the length is about the same. Women’s boards are narrower and usually softer. Women’s US boot sizes run about 1.5 above men’s for the same foot, so pick “US women’s” in the boot-size menu and the calculator converts it. A women’s 9.5 is roughly a men’s 8, which fits a regular waist.

How do I size for a child?

Choose Kids’ as the board type. The calculator keeps the length between chest and chin height and halves the ability adjustment. Don’t buy a board with growing room, because a board that is too long is hard to turn and slows down learning.

What waist width do I need for my boot size?

Roughly 251 mm plus 4 mm for each US men’s size above 9.5. Size 10.5 needs about 255 mm (mid-wide), and 11.5 and up needs 260 mm or more (wide). Bigger binding angles and low-profile boots let you go a few millimetres narrower.

How much shorter should a volume-shifted board be?

Usually 3–8 cm shorter than your regular length, with a waist 5–10 mm wider. Choose “Volume-shifted” under More options and the calculator takes 5 cm off. Check the model’s chart for the exact size.
