Solunar Fishing Times Calculator
Get a simple solunar fishing rating for any date from the moon phase, with major and minor period guidance.
How it works
moon age from a known new moon · rating = 40 + 60 × |cos(2π × age ÷ 29.53)| (peaks at new & full moon)
Solunar theory holds that fish and game feed most actively when the moon’s pull is strongest — at the new and full moon, when sun and moon align — and during the daily major and minor periods tied to the moon’s position. This simple model rates each day from the moon phase alone, peaking near new and full moons. The daily major periods fall roughly when the moon is directly overhead and again about 12 hours later when it is underfoot; the minor periods come near moonrise and moonset. Weather, tide and water temperature still matter, so treat the rating as one factor among several.
Worked example
On a full-moon date the moon is 180° from the sun, so |cos(2π × 0.5)| = 1 and the rating is 40 + 60 × 1 = 100. On a first-quarter date the term is 0, giving the baseline 40.

Frequently asked questions
What are major and minor solunar periods?
Major periods (about two hours) occur when the moon is directly overhead and again when it is underfoot, roughly 12 hours apart. Minor periods (about one hour) fall near moonrise and moonset.
Do new and full moons really fish better?
Many anglers find feeding activity peaks around the new and full moon, when lunar and solar pull align and tides are strongest. It is a tendency, not a guarantee — conditions on the day still rule.
Should I ignore weather and tide?
No. Solunar timing is one input; a stable barometer, the right tide stage, comfortable water temperature and light conditions often matter as much or more. Use the rating to pick between otherwise similar days.
