How it works

Total hours ≈ 0.01 × sq ft + 0.5 × rooms · Hours per day = total ÷ days

A deep spring clean — the kind that includes baseboards, windows, inside cabinets and behind furniture — runs far longer than a routine tidy, on the order of an hour per hundred square feet plus extra time for each distinct room. Estimating the total first lets you divide it into daily sessions you will actually finish, which is the trick to not abandoning the project halfway through. Tackle one zone per session rather than jumping between rooms.

Worked example

A 1,500 sq ft home with 6 rooms needs about 0.01 × 1500 + 0.5 × 6 = 15 + 3 = 18 hours. Spread over 7 days that is roughly 2.6 hours a day, or a little under one room per day.

Frequently asked questions

How long does spring cleaning a house take?

A thorough deep clean averages roughly one hour per 100 square feet, plus extra for detailed rooms like kitchens and bathrooms. A typical 1,500 sq ft home lands around 15 to 20 hours — much more than a weekly clean because it covers areas you normally skip.

Is it better to clean all at once or spread it out?

Spreading it over several days is easier to sustain and less exhausting, and it lets you do a proper job on each area instead of rushing. A common approach is one room or zone per session, which this calculator translates into a daily pace.

What counts as "deep" cleaning versus regular cleaning?

Regular cleaning is the visible upkeep — surfaces, floors, dishes. Deep cleaning adds the rest: baseboards and trim, inside appliances and cabinets, windows and tracks, light fixtures, behind and under furniture, and washing things like curtains and vents.
