Standing Seam Clip Calculator
Count the concealed clips and fasteners a standing-seam metal roof needs from panel count, panel length and clip spacing.
How it works
Clips per seam = floor(length × 12 ÷ spacing) + 1 · Total clips = clips per seam × panels × (1 + extra%) · Fasteners = clips × fasteners per clip
A standing-seam roof is held down by concealed clips that ride up each seam and lock the panel to the deck while letting it expand and contract. The number of clips on one seam is set by the panel length divided by the on-center spacing, plus one for the starting clip at the eave. High-wind and coastal zones call for tighter spacing (often 12 inches), which raises the clip and fastener count sharply.
Worked example
With 50 panels 16 ft long and clips every 24 inches, each seam takes floor(192 ÷ 24) + 1 = 9 clips. That is 450 clips before allowance; adding 5% gives about 473 clips, and at 2 screws each, roughly 946 fasteners.
Frequently asked questions
What clip spacing should I use?
Manufacturers publish spacing tied to wind uplift ratings. A common default is 24 inches on center, tightening to 12 inches near eaves, corners and in hurricane-prone regions. Always follow the panel maker’s uplift table for your zone.
Are fixed or floating clips right for my roof?
Floating (two-piece) clips let long panels move with temperature and are standard above roughly 20–30 ft panel lengths. Fixed clips are fine for short panels. Both are counted the same way here.
How many screws does each clip take?
Most clips use two fasteners into the deck or purlin; some heavy-gauge clips use three. Set the fasteners-per-clip field to match your clip so the screw count is accurate for ordering.
