Stay-at-Home Parent Salary Calculator
What would a stay-at-home mom or dad earn if paid market wages? Price the hours of childcare, cooking, cleaning, driving, household management and tutoring — and the life cover needed to replace them.
How it works
Weekly value = Σ hours × hourly rate for each role · overtime (optional) = (total hours − 40) × average rate × 0.5 · yearly value = weekly value × 52 · replacement cover = yearly value × years until the youngest is independent
A stay-at-home parent does unpaid work that a family would otherwise buy: childcare, cooking, cleaning, driving, managing money and schedules, and helping with schoolwork. Salary.com’s yearly “Mom Salary” survey prices these jobs at market wages and has put the total well above 100,000 a year once long hours and overtime are counted. The figure matters for budgeting a return to work (what you would pay others) and for life and disability insurance: if the at-home parent died, the family would have to pay for those services. Use local wages from job ads or official wage statistics.
Worked example
With 90 hours a week — 50 of childcare at 15, 12 of cooking at 15, 12 of cleaning at 14, 6 of driving at 16, 5 of household management at 25 and 5 of tutoring at 20 — the weekly value is 1,419.00 and the yearly value of the work is 73,788.00 (6,149.00 a month, 15.77 per hour on average). Replacing these services for 15 years would take about 1,106,820.00 of life cover before any investment return.

Frequently asked questions
How much would a stay-at-home mom be paid?
At market rates for the jobs involved, commonly 60,000 to 180,000 a year depending on hours, local wages and whether overtime is counted. Salary.com’s survey has estimated over 180,000 with overtime.
Does a stay-at-home parent need life insurance?
Yes. Without them the family must pay for childcare, cooking, cleaning and transport. A common approach is the yearly value of those services times the years until the youngest is independent.
Which hourly rates should I use?
Use local rates for a nanny or daycare, housekeeper, cook, driver or ride service, personal assistant and tutor — from job ads or national wage statistics.
Why is overtime optional?
Employees working more than 40 hours are often paid time and a half, which is how surveys reach very high figures. For a practical replacement budget, straight hourly rates are more realistic.
