Steps in a Lifetime Calculator
How many steps you have walked so far and will walk in a lifetime from your daily average — and how far that is in kilometres, laps of the Earth and trips to the Moon.
How it works
steps = daily steps × 365.25 × years walking (from about 18 months old); distance = steps × stride
Ten thousand steps a day, every day from toddlerhood to 82, is 290 million steps — roughly 220,000 km, or five and a half times around the planet. Most adults actually average 4,000–7,000, and activity declines with age, so the estimate is an upper bound for a steady habit. Stride length runs about 0.4 × height; 0.75 m is typical for adults.
Worked example
7,000 steps a day, age 35, living to 82: 86 million steps so far, 120 million to come — 154,000 km in total, nearly four laps of the equator.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps is a kilometre?
About 1,300–1,400 at a typical 0.75 m stride; a mile is roughly 2,100.
Does the calculator include childhood?
It assumes walking starts at 18 months and the same daily average throughout, which overstates the early years and understates active childhoods.
