Stock Profit / Loss Calculator
Work out the net profit or loss on a stock trade after buy and sell commissions, with the total return and break-even price.
How it works
Cost = shares × buy price + buy fee · Proceeds = shares × sell price − sell fee · Profit = proceeds − cost · Return % = profit ÷ cost × 100
Profit on a trade is what you receive when you sell minus everything you paid to get in, including both commissions. The return percentage puts that dollar figure in context relative to the capital tied up. The break-even sell price is the price at which proceeds exactly cover your cost plus the selling fee — sell below it and you lose money even if the share price rose from where you bought.
Worked example
Buy 100 shares at $50 ($5,000) and sell at $65 ($6,500) with no fees. Profit is 6,500 − 5,000 = $1,500, a 30% return. If each trade cost a $10 commission, profit drops to $1,480.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include taxes?
No. This is the pre-tax trading result. A realized gain in a taxable account is subject to capital gains tax — use a capital gains calculator to estimate the after-tax figure.
What is the break-even price?
It is the sell price at which your proceeds exactly equal your total cost, so you neither gain nor lose. It sits slightly above your buy price because it has to cover the commissions on both sides.
Why is my percentage return based on cost, not sale price?
Return measures gain against the capital you committed — the cost. Dividing by the sale price would understate the return, since the sale price already includes the profit.
